| At times I realize that I don't yet have a voice of my own. In the library at school once, the librarian said that she didn't think she said an original thing until she was 22. I wonder how you know if you say something truly original, or if, it's even possible to ever really do such a thing. I guess, in that respect, it doesn't really matter, and even if you do say something and are proud of yourself, it's only your ego that you're feeding. Maybe the only thing that matters is that what you say is real, and you mean it. Originality is only based upon how much you've been able to see, and not the full range of what is out there. Whereas a true feeling can be the same but expressed a million different ways.
In the meantime, however, I guess I will borrow the voices of people who are smarter and wiser than me. People who experienced with their lives things that I only understand abstractly. The following is a poem that I saw today on the wall at Saratoga Library:
After a While By Veronica Shoffstall
After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans.
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring your flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth. |
.....
I sure hope that I learn that, after a while. |
